Trace – Scaling a Carbon Tech Brand from Startup to Award-Winning Platform
Trace – Scaling a Carbon Tech Brand from Startup to Award-Winning Platform
Trace is a carbon management platform helping businesses track, reduce, and report their emissions. Since 2022, I’ve led design across every aspect of Trace’s brand and product — supporting its growth from a small climate tech startup focused on SMEs to a credible, award-winning platform now attracting enterprise clients.
As part of a long-term retainer through We Discover, I’ve been the senior designer overseeing everything from brand refinement and design systems to the product UI, website, marketing assets, and even physical conference booth designs. In 2024, our work was recognised with a Good Design Award – Gold for the Trace platform.

Problem / Context
Problem / Context
When I joined, Trace already had an initial brand and MVP, but the product lacked the polish and credibility needed to scale. The design language felt underdeveloped and inconsistent. The website was dated. And while the product was gaining traction with smaller clients, Trace needed to mature fast to meet the expectations of larger businesses and serious procurement teams.
As a lean team with limited internal design capability, they also needed a long-term partner who could evolve with them — someone who could scale the brand, support the product roadmap, and contribute strategically across the business.

Approach
Approach
My approach was grounded in gradual but intentional evolution. Rather than throwing out the existing brand, I refined and elevated it — building a stronger, more credible identity that felt appropriate for the space Trace was moving into.
This included:
Developing a scalable design system that worked across product and marketing
Reworking the visual identity to feel more mature and tech-forward, while preserving brand recognition
Establishing tone of voice and content patterns to bring cohesion across digital channels
Alongside this foundational work, I partnered closely with the Trace team to shape the product experience, revamp the website, and support new initiatives like the integration of an AI assistant, Tracey.

Key Work & Outcomes
Key Work & Outcomes
Brand refinement and design system
Trace’s original brand had a clear mission but lacked the visual and structural maturity of a modern SaaS platform. Drawing on my experience with larger tech brands, I delivered a visual refresh that stayed true to the original identity but elevated it with clearer hierarchy, better use of type, and more consistent patterns.
I rolled this into a cross-functional design system that unified marketing and product experiences — making it easier for the Trace team to scale consistently across channels.
Website redesign and conversion uplift
We redesigned the Trace website from the ground up, aligning it with the updated brand and bringing more focus to clarity, professionalism, and conversion. The new design helped Trace stand out in a crowded sustainability space and played a key role in attracting larger clients and improving lead conversion.
The results were immediate. Traffic increased, engagement improved, and the team reported a clear uptick in credibility during sales conversations.
Product design and AI assistant
On the product side, I’ve been involved in shaping new features, refining navigation, and applying the design system across the platform. In 2024, this included supporting the rollout of Tracey, a conversational AI assistant designed to help users understand their carbon emissions and take action.
I helped create a visual and personality identity for Tracey that felt consistent with the brand, approachable for users, and appropriate for the sensitive nature of the content.
Mentorship and leadership development
During the engagement, I mentored a junior designer on the project. Early on, I found myself redoing a lot of the work, which created additional strain during a period where I was juggling multiple projects.
I took this as a chance to reflect on how I lead. I restructured how we collaborated, reassigned responsibilities based on trust and skill level, and created more space for autonomy and learning. It helped me grow into a more intentional design leader — one who can balance standards with support, and structure with flexibility.
Resilience through long-term partnership
Over the course of the engagement, Trace went through multiple internal changes — shifting staff, evolving priorities, and the natural ups and downs of a growing startup. Despite all that, we maintained a strong working relationship and continued to produce consistently high-quality work.
It was not always smooth. Early in the project, I received feedback that I had deprioritised Trace while juggling other work. I took that seriously, restructured my time, and rebuilt trust through better communication and more proactive engagement. That moment helped me mature as a consultant and clarified what long-term partnership looks like.

Reflections
Reflections
This has been one of the most rewarding long-term engagements of my career. The work spanned product, brand, and growth — all rooted in a mission I care about. I had the chance to lead, to mentor, to reflect, and to continuously adapt.
It also reinforced something important: good design in fast-growing businesses is not just about execution. It's about showing up consistently, adapting to shifting needs, and building trust over time.
Trace is still evolving, and it’s been a privilege to help shape that journey.
